Our learning approach
Our teachers manage a diverse caseload of students with complex medical and additional needs, tailoring support to each student’s circumstances in consultation with the Learning Support Team. They collaborate closely with the student’s Census school, medical teams, and families to develop Individualised Education Programs and curriculum adjustments.
Curriculum planning is flexible and responsive, designed to connect with classroom learning while accommodating medical and emotional needs. Time spent with each student varies based on their health and educational requirements to ensure meaningful engagement and continuity of learning.
Our learning approach includes:
- The Hospital School sets high learning expectations, fostering meaningful connection to ensure each student feels valued and supported.
- Teachers promote student agency by involving learners in planning, empowering active engagement despite health challenges.
- Student voice and collaboration with families, medical teams, and Census schools enable fluid, responsive learning tailored to evolving needs.
- Learning progress is monitored, supporting smooth transitions and sustained growth.
- Partnerships with schools and health professionals deliver a connected curriculum that balances academic rigour with wellbeing, offering expansive opportunities for curiosity and growth.
Helping students progress
We support every student’s academic progress by:
- Collaborating closely with families, medical teams, and the student’s Census school to create Individualised Education Programs (IEP) that address specific learning goals.
- Tailoring learning programs to each student’s unique medical and educational needs, through IEPs ensuring they can continue to develop academically despite health challenges.
- Monitoring student learning regularly through ongoing observation and consistent teacher judgment, allowing timely adjustments to teaching and learning.
- Providing flexible and responsive curriculum planning that connects with mainstream classroom learning and adapts to medical and emotional needs by offering teaching in the classroom or at the bedside.
- Supporting smooth transitions into The Hospital School and back to their census schools or alternative education pathways to maintain continuity and sustained academic growth.
- Empowering students through personalised support that fosters engagement, agency, and confidence in their learning journey.
- Using data and evidence-informed practices to monitor and enhance student outcomes continuously.
