Additional learning support
The Hospital School has a Learning, Support and Transition (LST) Team that supports students from Pre-K to Year 12 and beyond who have complex medical and additional needs. We ensure these students can continue their education even when they are away from their regular school. Our team works closely with medical and allied health professionals to understand each student’s physical, mental, social, emotional, and learning needs. We use the four key areas from the NCCD — learning, social/emotional, sensory, and physical, to guide our support.
Support that fits your child's needs
We develop Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs) and Individual Education Programs (IEPs) with the hospital and the student’s regular school to support ongoing learning and social connection during hospital stays. For students from Aboriginal and EALD backgrounds, plans are tailored to respect their cultural and language needs. Additionally, we flag all students, including patients and their siblings, in the NCCD data collection to ensure those with long-term functional impacts on education are properly identified and supported.
Additional learning support can include:
- Ensuring every student learns in a safe, positive environment where their voice is heard and valued.
- Upholding our core values of Fluidity, Agency, Connection, and Expansion in everything we do.
- Collaborating with families, medical teams, and schools to develop the best learning and support plans
- Modification and adjustment to curriculum and program delivered to the students
- Maintaining strong social and academic connections for students during hospital stays
- Providing tailored programs to help high potential and gifted students with their advanced learning needs
- Small group tutoring to provide targeted literacy and numeracy through student's IEPs
- Regular check-ins with LST and wrap-around with medical team
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
